Pop. 4,448. In Tilbury East T., Kent C., on C. Rds. I & 42, 2 km S of Hwy 40 1, 29 km. SW of Chatham.
The town came into existence when the Canada Southern Railway opened its line between Fort Erie and Windsor in the early 1870s and established a station at the border of Kent and Essex Cs. David Henderson opened a general store and operated a post office
By 1887 the community was incorporated into a village known as Tilbury Centre. In 1896 the 'Centre' was dropped. The name described the community as being central to the townships of Tilbury North, Tilbury West, and Tilbury East.
The township names came from Tilbury on the Thames in Essex, England. At one time there were five hotels selling liquor on the west side of Tilbury' s main street. There were none on the east side of the street, which was in the dry county of Kent.
