- Pop. 4,448. In Tilbury East T., Kent C., on C. Rds. I & 42, 2 km S of Hwy 40 1, 29 km. SW of Chatham.
- The town came into existence when the Canada Southern Railway opened its line between Fort Erie and Windsor in the early 1870s and established a station at the border of Kent and Essex Cs. David Henderson opened a general store and operated a post office
- By 1887 the community was incorporated into a village known as Tilbury Centre. In 1896 the 'Centre' was dropped. The name described the community as being central to the townships of Tilbury North, Tilbury West, and Tilbury East.
- The township names came from Tilbury on the Thames in Essex, England. At one time there were five hotels selling liquor on the west side of Tilbury' s main street. There were none on the east side of the street, which was in the dry county of Kent.
