Description From Owner:
  • Pop. 13,523. In Dereham T., Oxford C., on Otter Cr. and Hwys 3 & 19 and C. Rds. 19 & 37, 38 km. S of Woodstock.
  • In 1825, George Tillson, originally from Massachusetts, built a dam, sawmill, and forge on the site of the town now named after him.
  • The forge manufactured bog iron ore, deposits of which were found nearby, and the community that sprang up around it was called Dereham Forge.
  • When the town started local government in 1836, Tillson was appointed commissioner of roads, and insisted on the town having a main street 100 feet (30.4 m) wide, named Broadway.
  • This was so a team of oxen could make a U-turn; all that space may have seemed a waste in the 1800s, but today Tillsonburg is one of very few Ontario communities still able to provide angled parallel parking on both sides of its main street.
  • When Tillsonburg achieved town status in 1869, an 'I' got dropped due to a clerical error.
  • It stayed that way, officially, until 1902, when an act of the Ontario legislature put the second 'I' back into Tillsonburg.
