- Pop. 5,864. In the Reg. Mun. of Durham on Beaver Cr. and C. Rds. 1,8 & 47, 66 km. NE of Toronto.
- Uxbridge T. was part of a parcel ofland granted in 1798 to a group of French Royalists, under the Comte de. Puisaye, who had fled to England during the French Revolution.
- Few of the emigres went to Upper Canada and of those who arrived, only a few settled. In 1803 the government of Canada regained control of the unsettled lands and had them surveyed for regular settlement.
- The area that was to become the town of Uxbridge was settled starting in 1805 by a dozen Quaker families from Pennsylvania. The township from which the community took its name was shown on a map in 1798.
- The township was named after Uxbridge in Middlesex, England, or possibly after a well-known soldier, the Earl of Uxbridge. The hamlet was known as Uxbridge Mills until Joseph Bascom became the first postmaster in 1936.
- In the late 1840s a subdivision of the community developed by Joseph Gould was called Gouldsville. Just west of present-day Uxbridge is the second meeting house, erected in 1820 by Quaker families to replace a log structure built in 1809.
- Uxbridge was the first town in Ontario to receive an official coat of arms -- in 1956.
- About 13 km. north of Uxbridge, surrounded by farm fields, is the architecturally unusual Thomas Foster Memorial Temple, dedicated in 1936 as a memorial to local pioneers and for use as a funeral chapel in inclement weather.
- It is also the fmal resting place of Thomas Foster (thrice mayor of Toronto) who died in 1945 at the age of 93.
- The memorial was inspired by the Taj Mahal at Agra, India, which Thomas had visited. He did not want Eastern architecture and instructed the firm of Craig and Madill to come up with a Byzantine design.
- The interior is fmished with vari-coloured marble and rich mosaics. Uxbridge is home of the Whitchurch-StoufJVille Museum which maintains pioneer schoolhouses, a bam, log home and has exhibit buildings displaying artifacts from the community's past.
