  • Pop. 2,030. In West Hawkesbury T., Prescott and Russell Cs., on Hwy 34 and C. Rd. 10, 83 km NE of Ottawa.
  • The first settler was United Empire Loyalist Simeon Van Kleek from Poughkeepsie, NY, whose 500-acre (202.5 ha) grant in 1798 included the entire site of the present town.
  • The frrst building erected was a tavern, operated by Van Kleek' s son, Simon. More than half the town now is of French descent.
