- Pop. 1,657. In Mersea T., Essex C., and Romney T., Kent C., on Muddy Cr., 2 km from L. Erie on C. Rd. 3, 13 km NE of Leamington.
- The community was settled in the earty 1800s as newcomers located along the Talbot Rd.
- The place was frrst known as Pegtown -- either because there were seven cobblers in the community or because the homes, built without foundations, were propped up on posts, or pegs.
- When the post office was established in 1864, the community was called Wheatley after early settler Richard Wheatley.
- Gas wells were discovered near Wheatley in 1905, and by 1907 the village was lighted at night by gas lamps. Wheatley has the largest freshwater fish-processing plant in the world, and Wheatley Provincial Park is nearby.
