Description From Owner:

Pop. 2,334. In Winchester T., Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Cs., on C. Rd. 3 just E of C. Rd. 31, 51 km SE of Ottawa.
Ben Bates, who arrived in 1836, was the first recorded settler. The place was named Bates Corners until the post office opened in 1855 as West Winchester after the township.
The township had been named after the Colonial Secretary, the Earl of Winchester. Some sources claim the place was named after the City of Winchester in Hampshire, England.
In 1890 the name was shortened to Winchester.
