Ontario Tourism Region : The Great Waterway
Description From Owner:
- Pop. 206. In Murray T., Northumberland C., on Cold Cr. 1 km. N of C. Rd. 41, 12 km. NW of Trenton.
- The area was settled by United Empire Loyalists and immigrants from the British Isles. When the post office opened in 1854, the place was called Smith's Corners after Thomas Smith, who operated a store and tavern.
- Several years later, community residents petitioned the post office for an official name designation. Since they were in Northumberland c., they chose Wooler, the name of a community in Northumberland C., England.
- At one time a toll gate at Wooler collected a toll of two cents per stagecoach to help pay for road maintenance costs.
