- Pop. 95. In Hope T., Northumberland C. on Little Ganaraska R., and C. Rds. 9 & 65, 16 km NW of Port Hope. The first settler in 1830 was Englishman Francis Tamblyn.
- John McMurtry and his wife arrived in the early1840s and built a grist and sawmill.
- When the post office opened in 1853, postmaster McMurtry named the place after his wife, Elizabeth. McMurtry also operated a distillery and owned one of the village's three hotels.
