- The T. was named in 1862, for Sir William Granville Venables Vernon IiarcoUrt, a prominent English parliamentarian and Statesman, or a village in Shropshire, England.
- In 1861, the Ts. of Harcourt, Dysart, Bruton, Clyde, Dudley, Eyre, Guilford, Harburn and Havelock were bought from the government by the Canadian Land and Emigration Co. to be opened up for settlers.
