- The place was first called Midland Junction because it was at the intersection of the Midland and Toronto & Nipissing railways.
- In 1874 it was named after Sir John Douglas Sutherland Campbell, Marquess of Lorne (1845-1914) who was governor general of Canada 1878-83.
