Description From Owner:
- Part of the Town of Haldimand in the Reg. Mun. of Haldimand-Norfolk on Hwy. 3 and C. Rd. 20, 10 km SW of Cayuga.
- The place was named for storekeeper John Hamilton Nelles who was shot and killed by one offour outlaws during a robbery in 1854. See box above.
- In 1854, storekeeper John Hamilton Nelles of Nelles Corners near Cayuga, was shot and killed by one of four outlaws during a robbery.
- Three men, named Blowes, Bryson and King were arrested in Cayuga attempting to sell beaver pelts said to have been stolen from Nelles. King and Blowes were convicted of the murder and hanged; Bryson received a life sentence.
- The fourth man, thought to have been William Townsend was arrested in the United States in 1857.
- He was tried at Cayuga and acquitted on the grounds of mistaken identity, claiming to be Robert McHenry.
- A short time later a Welland County police officer was murdered and 'McHenry' was tried for that crime.
- However he claimed to be 'Townsend' and not 'McHenry.' He used Crown evidence from his earlier trial and won another acquittal.
