Pop. 190. In Charlotteville T., Norfolk C. on the shore of Long Point Bay, L. Erie and C. Rd. 2, 17 km S of Simcoe.
The place was first named Potters Creek for bits of pottery remaining from a pottery operation.
For a time the name was Crane's Creek. In 1818 Samuel Mason settled and started 'Big Furnace,' a smelter to refine large local deposits of bog iron.
Some of the implements he made are now in the Norfolk County Museum. The place was finally named for the Joseph Van Norman family, early settlers.
