In Townsend T., Norfolk C., Reg. Mun. of Haldimand-Norfolk on Hwy. 3 and C. Rd. 5, 9 km N of Port Dover.
The place was first called Grindstone for the sign over the local tavern. In 1857 James Renton bought land from Jonathan B. Smith and surveyed the village.
