Description From Owner:
  • Pop. 8,225. In Tecwnseth T., Simcoe C., on the Boyne R. (a tributary of the Nottawasaga) and Hwy 89, 35 km. SW of Barrie.
  • In 1847 settler William Fletcher and his son, John, built a log shanty and the following year a sawmill and frame house. Fletcher named the place Alliston after his native town in Yorkshire, England.
  • In 1891 a frre destroyed most of the town's business establishments. Alliston has two famous sons, Sir Frederick Grant Banting and Theodore Pringle Loblaw.
  • In 1923, Banting shared a Nobel Prize with his University of Toronto department head, Dr. J. J. R. MacLeod, for isolating insulin, used in the treatment of diabetes.
  • Theodore Pringle Loblaw was born in the nearby hamlet of Elm Grove in 1872. An orphan, he went to work in a Toronto grocery store.
  • By the age of 28 he owned his own shop, and in 1919, in partnership with J. Milton Cork, founded Loblaws Groceterias Ltd., a grocery chain that at one time owned 158 stores in the United States and more than 100 in Ontario.
