Description From Owner:
  • Pop. 6,552. In McNab T., Renfrew C., on L. des Chats (a widening of the Ottawa R. at the mouth of the Madawaska R.) and C. Rds. 1 & 2, just off Hwy 17,67 km. W of Ottawa.
  • In 1823, Archibald McNab, 13th chief of the Clan McNab, came to Upper Canada with 80 Scottish Highlanders and took control of an unsettled township, which he named after himself.
  • He built a log house that he called Kennell Lodge and established the patriarchal rule of a Scottish chief, compelling settlers to pay illegal fees for their lands.
  • In 1831, McNab met George and Andrew Buchanan in Montreal and persuaded them to settle in his township. The Buchanans named the place Arnprior after their home in Stirlingshire, Scotland.
  • In the 1830s the Toronto Examiner exposed McNab's illegal activities and, following a government investigation, he lost his settlement rights in 1840 and returned to Scotland.
