Description From Owner:
  • Enjoy the Fair season throughout Ontario and congratulate the organizers on the hard work and dedication of showcasing rural Ontario.
  • Pop. 443. In W. Carleton T., Reg. Mun. of Ottawa-Carleton, on Carp R. and C. Rd. 5,30 km. W of Ottawa.
  • Settled in the 1830s, the place was named after the river on which it is situated. The name suggests the river once produced many carp fish, but there is no record of this.
  • It was, however, noted for an abundance of suckers, harvested during the spring Tun. The community is often referred to regionally as The Carp, or Carp Village.
  • In the 1840s, Dooley's hostelry opened at Carp and it was from its balcony that Sir John A. Macdonald addressed a crowd of hundreds during his 1887 election campaign.
  • The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1936.
  • The Diefenbunker, the most famous of a series of bunkers built in Canada during the Cold War to ensure continuance of government in the event of nuclear attack, is located near here.
  • It is now operated by a nonprofit group that conducts tours of the former Central Emergency Government Headquarters and its Cold War Museum.
  • The four-storey, 100,000-square-foot underground facility could accommodate up to 500 occupants for 30 days until primary fallout from a nuclear attack would have dissipated.
